Meet Jasper, Quantitative Trader at BlockTech

What Changes When a Market Matures: Jasper on the Options Desk.
From the moment Jasper Grootscholten walked onto a trading floor during a university open day, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He had always been fascinated by numbers.
Whether it was calculating the exact tip at a restaurant, optimizing a strategy in a video game, or solving complex mathematical problems, his mind naturally gravitated toward patterns, probabilities and calculations. To him, numbers were never just numbers; they were puzzles waiting to be solved.
“You can spend a lot of time finding the perfect answer. But if the deadline was five seconds, it doesn’t matter anymore,”
That fascination eventually led him to study econometrics. At the time, he knew little about trading. What he did know was that he enjoyed mathematics and wanted to apply it in a practical setting. Then came that visit to a trading floor. “There were screens everywhere, graphs everywhere, people reacting to information in real time. Everything was happening at once. I’d never seen anything like it before. I immediately knew: this is what I want to do.”
Today, Jasper works as a Quantitative Trader on BlockTech’s Crypto Options Desk. But his story is not just about becoming a trader. It is also the story of how both the crypto market and BlockTech itself evolved from a fast-moving startup environment into a highly professional operation. And because he has witnessed that transformation firsthand, few people are better positioned to tell that story.
Trading at the intersection of research and execution
The title “Quantitative Trader” means different things at different companies. In traditional trading firms, traders, researchers and engineers often operate in separate silos. At BlockTech, those lines are a little less rigid. “The quant part of trading here is quite different from what people might expect,” Jasper explains. “We still have engineers, researchers and data scientists, but the roles overlap much more. Most of us do a little bit of everything.”
Jasper naturally gravitates toward the quantitative side of the role. A significant part of his time is spent researching market behavior, analyzing data and looking for ways to improve BlockTech’s trading systems. At the same time, he is also actively involved in managing positions and monitoring markets. That specific combination is what really attracts him to the role.
“You solve a problem, implement a solution and almost immediately see the result. If you improve something, you can see it reflected in the performance of the system. That direct feedback loop is incredibly satisfying.” It is a mindset that fits naturally within BlockTech’s culture, where continuous improvement is part of everyday life.

Growing up alongside the crypto market
When Jasper joined BlockTech three years ago, both the company and the crypto options market looked very different. Back then, everything moved incredibly fast. Trading systems were constantly evolving, and the team was building and adjusting in real time as new situations emerged.
That energy would look very different today. As the crypto market matured, so did the companies operating within it. The systems became more stable, research became more rigorous, and decisions became increasingly data-driven. Jasper explains: “Three years ago, someone could say: ‘Let’s increase this parameter,’ and that might be enough. Today, someone will spend a week analyzing the data before making that recommendation.”
“There is always another improvement to make. Another problem to solve.
Another edge to find.”
The result is a trading environment that is far more professional than it was only a few years ago. But that professionalism also comes with its own challenges, because as the markets have matured, the easy opportunities have disappeared. “The little things matter much more now. The improvements we’re making today are often much smaller than before, but they’re also much more important. Every competitor is improving at the same time. Standing still simply isn’t an option.”
Learning from the days that matter most
For most traders, the biggest lessons rarely come from quiet days. They come from chaos. On calm market days, Jasper spends much of his time conducting research and analyzing data. But during periods of extreme volatility, everything changes. “That’s when you really feel like a trader.”
The feedback loop gets dramatically shorter. Markets move fast, positions need constant attention, and systems get stress-tested to their limits. Jasper still remembers several days where extraordinary volume showed the team exactly where the next improvement needed to happen.
Those moments can be frustrating, especially when they prevent the team from fully capitalizing on market opportunities. Yet they are also some of the most valuable learning experiences: “When something breaks under pressure, you learn exactly where the limits are,” Jasper says. “Then you spend the next weeks making sure it doesn’t happen again.”

When intuition matters more than data
Despite the mathematical foundation of quantitative trading, markets do not always wait for the perfect analysis. Sometimes there simply isn't enough time. During periods of extreme market activity, traders often need to make decisions within seconds. In those situations, intuition becomes part of the process.
“Ideally, you want all the data before making a decision. But sometimes you only have five seconds, and you still need to make the call.” According to Jasper, that ability to act under uncertainty is one of the biggest differences between researchers and traders. Quantitative researchers often search for the most accurate answer while traders sometimes need the best available answer right now.
“You solve a problem, implement a solution and almost immediately see the result.”
“You can spend a lot of time finding the perfect answer. But if the deadline was five seconds, it doesn’t matter anymore,” he explains. This is where the trading experience comes in. Over time, traders develop a feel for what matters, what doesn’t, and where the real risks lie. That intuition isn’t magic. It is built through repetition, mistakes and countless hours spent observing markets.
And at BlockTech, learning from those mistakes is considered part of the process. “We want people to take responsibility and learn from what happens. That’s often where the biggest growth comes from.”
Curiosity as a competitive advantage
Ask Jasper what advice he would give to future hires, and his answer comes quickly: “Always stay curious.” Not because curiosity sounds nice on a recruitment page, but because curiosity is essential for solving difficult problems. “If you really want to understand something, keep asking questions until you get to the core of it.”
That mindset applies equally to trading systems, software infrastructure and market behavior. The deeper your understanding becomes, the faster you can identify problems and improve solutions. It is also one of the reasons why BlockTech’s collaborative culture resonates so strongly with him.
“People are really encouraged to take ownership, investigate problems and share knowledge across teams.”
When Jasper reflects on the past three years, he sees two parallel stories. The first is the evolution of the crypto-options market itself, which has transformed from a chaotic and unpredictable ‘battlefield’ into a sophisticated global industry. The second is the evolution of BlockTech itself: “We’ve made the same professionalization journey as the market.”
But despite all that progress, the company has still retained something that Jasper values deeply: its willingness to learn, improve and keep pushing forward. And perhaps that is why he remains so enthusiastic about the future. Because in trading, the evolution never stops. “There is always another improvement to make. Another problem to solve. Another competitive edge to find.”
And for someone who has spent his entire life enjoying numbers, this is exactly the environment where he wants to be.
